Trigeminal Neuralgia

  • Nerve disorder that affects the facial nerves, specifically the trigeminal nerve; can be caused by a tumor, multiple sclerosis, or severe brain injury. 

  • Symptoms - shooting pain, neurological pain in the face

  • Diagnosis - CT scan/MRI, trigeminal reflex testing

  • Treatment - treatment of underlying health problem,  anti-seizure drugs, electrostimulation, NSAIDs, cutting the nerve to prevent nerve transmissions. 

  • Prevention - unknown

  • Athlete can participate as tolerated, but should rest during episodes.
